Streetscape Project Soon to be Underway

If you normally park in the lot between Alexander and Sage Streets in downtown Toccoa, you might have to find alternate parking for a time.

That’s because work on Phase 6 of the city’s Streetscape Project is about to get underway.

The work involves the alleyway next to WNEG Radio between Alexander and Sage Streets, as well as some of the sidewalk along Alexander Street.

City Manager Billy Morse said that could cause some traffic routing while the work continues.

“Some of the work has already begun,” said Morse. “They’ve done some salt cutting of the sidewalk in preparation for the actual construction work. That includes some brick pavers and that sort of thing.”

Last week, crews surveyed the area and put up barriers to the alleyway between Alexander and Sage Streets.

Morse said now is the time for those who normally use the alleyway and parking lot to find alternate routes and parking.

“There will be some inconvenience during the construction phase,” said Morse. “We’ll probably be blocking off some sidewalks soon, so folks probably need to be thinking about alternates at this time.”

Toccoa Main Street is spearheading the project, according to Morse.

Total cost of the Phase 6 Streetscape Project is estimated at just under $350,000.

Toccoa City Commissioners approved the project in 2012 and received $282,000 in Georgia DOT funds to help pay for it.

Toccoa is also providing matching funds.
