Toccoa Main Street Sponsoring “Night at the Museums”

Toccoa Main Street is hosting a night of family fun later this month that will give you the opportunity to learn more about our community and enjoy a movie as well.

It’s called, “Night at the Museums” and it’s coming up Friday June 29th from 4p to 7p.

Main Street Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby said the evening will offer tours of Toccoa’s three museums with a fun family movie afterwards

The first museum stop, according to Crosby, will be at the Miles Through Time Automotive Museum on East Currahee St.

“There’s cars from 100 years old up to the present,” Crosby explained. “What’s different is that some of the owners will be there to answer questions and talk about the history of them. So it is a one-of-a-kind museum.”

Next, it’s on to the Currahee Military Museum at the train depot downtown.

Surprisingly, Crosby says many people are unaware of the museum and the artifacts on display there.

“The first part of the museum is the Stephens County museum that deals with our history,” she said. “The second part of the museum deals with our military history where there is the Abermarle stable that our paratroopers use in England during WWII. There will be guides to tell that story. The third part of the museum is for veterans. It’s very moving to go in there and see  those who have served in the military over the years.”

The third and final museum on the tour is the Leon and Rachel Gathany Museum of Natural History on the campus of Toccoa Falls College.

“It’s a very unique museum. A lot of people in Stephens County will remember Mr. Gathany. He was a school teacher and a naturalist. He had some very unique specimens that he collected over the years. So I think people will be very interested in the displays that are out there,” Crosby said.

Then at 8p you and your family can head on over to the Ritz Theatre to watch the movie, “Night at the Museum.”

Crosby says she expects Night at the Museums to be a fun night of learning and entertainment for the entire family.

Wristbands can be purchased at the Welcome Center or any one of the museums for $10 for the entire museum tour, museum and concession, but it’s free for children under 12.
