Toccoa Police Asking for Help With 2011 Death Now Called Homicide

Authorities are asking for the public’s help with a 2011 death in Toccoa that authorities are calling a homicide.

According to Toccoa Police Department Chief Tim Jarrell, police responded to a Norman Drive residence on March 1, 2011 at about 5:30 p.m.

“The police department responded to 5 Norman Drive of a report of a man found deceased in his residence,” said Jarrell. “The decedent, who was Robert Simmons, age 46, was transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.”

Jarrell said that the medical examiner then determined from that autopsy the manner of death was homicide.

Jarrell did not release any details about the cause of death or any other information regarding the case.

In addition, Monday’s press release is the first mention by authorities that this death was a homicide. Jarrell says that he does not know why the information was not released initially, adding that once he became interim chief last August, the GBI was already heavily involved in the case and did not want to endanger that.

Jarrell said the investigation has a great deal of sensitive information.

“The evidence and information that we have in this case is very sensitive,” said Jarrell. “It is our belief that the release of any pertinent information involved would interfere with the investigation and the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons involved. We are coming forward now, asking for someone to contact the two numbers we have provided in our press release so that they may contact us and we can determine their truthfulness in what information they are able to give to us.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations and the Toccoa Police Department are investigating the case, along with the assistance of the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

Both Jarrell and the District Attorney’s Office say the investigation remains very active at this time.

Jarrell says anyone with information on the murder of Robert Simmons is asked to contact the GBI at 706-348-4866 or Lieutenant Eddie Neal with the Toccoa Police Department at 706-282-3244.
