Ty Cobb Statue to be Unveiled May 21

CHARLES ROBERTSON, WLHR

While the decision of where was answered two months ago for the Ty Cobb Statue, last night’s Royston City Council meeting answered the question of when.

After some discussion in Tuesday night’s meeting of when to unveil the newly acquired Ty Cobb Statue that will be placed in front of the Royston Library, a date and time was approved by the City council.

Debate among those in attendance of the meeting circled around the possibility of holding the unveiling on the same Saturday as the Royston Car Show, while some felt a Saturday would bring the largest crowd, Council member Keith Turman felt that the following Sunday would also work well.

“We have a car show event that a has already been pre-planned, that we have annually and that day has already been assigned, and with this statue being unveiled we want to have as many people as possible being here,” said Turman. “We didn’t want it to be a situation where we felt like we were gonna rush it by coming in, showing up, and everybody darting out within 20-30 minutes after the ceremony. We wanted people to take the time to come to the city, to look at the city, the home place of Ty Cobb, and you know, have an opportunity to stand around and be a part of the ceremony and not rush through it.”

Turman made a motion for the Sunday following the car show which saw a unanimous approval by the council says Mayor David Jordan.

“After much discussion to try to maximize attendances for everybody, because we want everybody to have an opportunity to get here, we kind of worked it out and we’re gonna do this May the 21st at 2 p.m. We talked about several days but we think that will give everybody the broadest ability to get here.”

More details on the Ty Cobb unveiling are expected to be released in the near future.
