Work is Continuing on County Fire Stations

Progress is continuing on three new fire stations in Stephens County.

The county is using SPLOST VI money to build stations on North Holcomb Drive and Red Bluff Road to provide more coverage to the Big Smith Fire Department, and Black Mountain Road to provide more coverage to the Shiloh Fire Department.

On Tuesday, county commissioners unanimously approved bids for carpentry and electrical work at the stations.

The county commission approved a bid of $10,000 per station from Leonard Griffin Builders for carpentry work provided all necessary paperwork is turned in, along with a bid of $6,825 per station for electrical work to Henry Hayes Electric.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said they are excited about the progress that is being made.

According to Ayers, the concrete slab has been poured at North Holcomb and at Black Mountain, grading work is almost complete.

Also on Tuesday, county commissioners unanimously approved a warranty deed with Currahee Club Utilities LLC for the Red Bluff fire station site.

Ayers said that will allow that station project to move forward now as well.

“That is what we were waiting on, to get the signatures, before the road department could head out there for some clearing,” said Ayers. “The buildings are scheduled to come in the last of November and will start going up.”

Ayers said the county hopes to have at least two of the stations done by the end of the calendar year.

In other news from Tuesday’s meeting, county commissioners unanimously approved a bid of $37,900 for asbestos abatement at the old Middle School gym by Martin Construction and a bid of $14,200 from Brian Fuller for dome cleaning, prepping, painting, and replacing wood on the shutters of the historic county courthouse.

Ayers said there is no word on when those two projects will get underway.
